    As you may be aware, the 50th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's first human spaceflight is coming up on 12th April 2011.  The UK's space community has been looking at ways to celebrate this milestone through events and activities in the run-up to, during and after the anniversary next year. To date, we have organised a launch event at the House of Commons and we now have a website online (yurigagarin50.org), which has a searchable calendar of events associated with the anniversary.  This website will be developed over the coming months to provide information and resources relating to Gagarin, the legacy of his spaceflight and current space activities.

    To encourage activities linked to the anniversary, we would like to hold a community meeting at the National Space Centre, Leicester, for people involved in space outreach and education.  The meeting will take place on Thursday 7th October at 2pm.

    YuriGagarin50 has various projects under development, including “Rockets for Yuri”, a planned UK-wide stomp/water rocket launch on the 12th April 2011, and the muDEX educational microgravity experiment, which could give schools the opportunity to add their own data to a fluid research project carried out on the International Space Station. The agenda for the meeting will include a presentation on activities and plans to date, followed by a brainstorming session to discuss other ways of celebrating Gagarin’s flight.

    Places will be limited so, if you would like to attend, please contact Anita Heward as soon as possible.

    2010 Lecture: Powering the Future, Dr Melanie Windridge

    Find out how the reaction that powers the sun could provide a clean energy source for the future.

    An exciting, interactive free talk for school students, which builds on everyday physics to explain groundbreaking research.

    This inspiring lecture will reveal:

    -The physics behind the fusion reaction that powers the sun;

    -How physicists are trying to replicate the fusion reaction in massive experiments at places such as JET, the world’s largest nuclear fusion experiment at Culham

    -The potential for harnessing the energy produced in the fusion reaction as a future alternative to fossil fuels.

    With hands-on demonstrations the lecture will explore the challenges of creating facilities that can withstand the high temperatures of the sun in order to create the fusion reaction on earth.
