Scientists in Sport is a GlaxoSmithKline schools outreach programme, inspired by the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. It comprises a series of open days at universities for 11-14 year old school children to learn about the various uses of science in sport. The Scientists in Sport pilot event took place at King's College, London in July 2010. Following its success, the outreach programme is being rolled out across the country. As part of this programme, ‘Spotting Sporting Talent’ events will be held at Loughborough University on 7th July 2011, Winter 2011 and Summer 2012. Students will tour the stunning facilities at the university. They will also hear from a top youth talent spotter - what makes a great athlete? The Scientists in Sport anti-doping theme will also shine through - students will hear about the history of anti-doping, take part in debates and test 'urine' samples for banned substances. You spoke and we listened.... Due to popular demand, for 2011 we have changed the format of our annual conference from 2.5 days to 2 days, and to enable those of you who are finding it increasingly difficult to be released from school for CPD due to 'rarely cover' to attend, we are holding it on a Friday to Saturday. Also, in direct response to the very positive feedback we received from this years' delegates, we will be holding the conference at Keele University again which has excellent facilities and delegate accommodation. Full details will follow in due course but in the meantime, please put these dates in your diary - and we hope to see you there in 2011!
