Your guide to key STEM events in the region and throughout the UK.
The IYC 2011 will be a year-long celebration in which anyone can participate. You can coordinate an activity, engage in a project, or simply share an idea. Join in now and become part of something special.
The scheme offers up to £3000 to support teachers, scientists and engineers in working together to inspire young people. Fantastic projects can be created by partnerships like these, allowing teachers to increase their scientific knowledge and giving scientists and engineers the chance to develop their communication skills and engage with enquiring young minds. Perhaps most importantly, these projects give school students a taste of science and engineering today, and their relevance for society. For successful applicants, the grant is awarded directly to the school, enabling the school to pay for any specialist equipment needed for the investigation, travel expenses for the scientist/engineer and/or the school group and possibly teacher supply cover.
A dedicated team at The Royal Society supports all stages of the application process, including advising on investigations you may be considering and guidance in finding a suitable scientist/engineer partner. The Autumn round of Partnership Grants applications opens in September and the closing date is 25 February 2011.
Top of the Bench is a national competition run by the RSC for 14-16 year old students. The competition begins with regional heats to select teams to represent the RSC local sections in the UK final in April 2011.

Give your pupils the chance to win BIG prizes by entering STEM Challenge 5: The Wetsuit Challenge. Although triathlon has been an Olympic sport since 2000, Paratriathlon has not yet appeared at the Paralympics. In preparation for the sport’s possible debut at forthcoming Games Jimmy Goddard, one of GB's leading Paratriathletes, needs your help to prepare for bringing home a Paralympic medal! GE and STEMNET have a Challenge for students aged 11-14: we are asking teams to design a unique wetsuit for Jimmy. Your design could be the difference between success and failure, so get your thinking caps on, be creative, and maybe Jimmy’s medal-in-waiting could be a gold!
The Challenge will take teams up to four weeks to complete in a typical club setting. Teams need to be registered by their Teacher by 5pm on 17 January 2011. To do this, you need to login or register here..Teams do not need to have competition entries ready by this date - their entries will be judged at a local session which will take place in February 2011. The top 8 teams will be selected to take place in the National Final at The Big Bang Fair, Excel, London on Saturday 15th March 2011, where Jimmy Goddard will be Head Judge!
