A 'day-in-the-life-video' of Chemist Pete Licence

by JenniferD 2. April 2009 10:27

Chemists... Aren't they stuck in a lab all day?!  Pete Licence’s proves us wrong as we follow him on one of his many trips to Addis Ababa, where he guest lectures on green chemisty and sustainability.  Watch his 'day-in-the-life' video to find out more.

We are still on the look-out for more people like Pete, who have interesting roles within STEM subjects.  If you think people would be interested in your day-to-day role, or know someone who would make a good case study, .

Visit our You Tube channel to watch the other day-in-the-life videos

STEM Student Journalist Henry Lau reports on Big Bang - The UK's Young Scientists and Engineers Fair

by Guest Blogger: STEM Student Journalist 9. March 2009 12:25

I was invited to Big Bang, the UK Young Scientists and Engineers Fair to report as a STEM Student Journalist on behalf of Ignition* and the East Midlands STEM Partnership.  The Big Bang, held at the Queen Elizabeth II conference centre, in London, is a culturally and educationally important event with high profile dignitaries including HRH Duke of York and local MP Mark Field.  Over the 3 days, the event will see 6000 schoolchildren be inspired by their peers.

My first stop was a wide-ranging exhibition of industries and associations who use science and engineering in their daily activities.  From nutritionists and sports scientists, who helped James Cracknell, Ben Fogle and Ed Coats reach the South Pole, to engineers modeling the flow of people for new stadiums yet to be built for the 2012 London Olympics.

A brief stopover in the Careers Hotel gave me the chance to chat to several interesting scientists and engineers before wrapping up the day with ‘Visualised’, a show of everyday objects used in a dazzling and unusual way, to inspire students to look at science and engineering in a new light.

Science in the news…

by JenniferD 29. January 2009 14:09

Science was very prominent in yesterday’s news, so just in case you missed out, here’s some links…

The Government launched a campaign on Wednesday 28th January 2009 [So What? So Everything] to reduce public perception of science as "elitist". The campaign is being run by the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (Dius) and will try to change the geeky opinion of science within the community.  Press Release - Website

Following on from the Government’s announcement yesterday morning, BBC Radio 4 Today Programme featured Professor Marcus du Sautoy, Professor of the Public Understanding of Science at Oxford University and Science Minister Lord Drayson discussing the fact that many people think that science is "too clever for them or elitist in some way" click here to listen
