The Salters' Festivals of Chemistry help to promote the appreciation of chemistry and related sciences among the young and are run in partnership with the Royal Society of Chemistry. The Festivals are one-day fun events held for year 7 and 8 students at universities throughout the UK and Ireland. They begin in late March and run through to mid June. Salters' Festivals provide the opportunity for enthusiastic young students to spend a day in a university department and to take part in practical chemistry activities which are fun! Prizes are awarded to the winning teams and all students receive participation certificates and fun prizes.
The theme for this event is global warming and will include a newly written piece called ‘Albedo’ which looks at the disappearing ice caps and the implications for global warming. Extracts from ‘Steel’ will also be performed. This piece was performed at the Royal Opera House (Linbury) in 2005 and creates a love story out of the smelting of steel and its subsequent relationship with oxygen to form rust! Other pieces from the choral repertoire will also be performed including the very ‘tribal’ Rain Dance by Karl Jenkins.
The evening will be sponsored by local business and Nottinghamshire County Council. Students from Nottinghamshire schools will form the cast, as well as local Dance groups and adult choirs.
Science on Stage has presented shows in all the major venues in the area over the last decade. All of them featuring dramatic science demonstrations and spectacular music and dance sequences with spectacular lighting effects. May 2nd promises to be en evening to remember!
