STEM Forum

by Guest Blogger: CathyB 12. September 2010 20:35

STEMNET and the STEM Advisory Forum are running a STEM Forum event for STEM Ambassadors and STEM school/college teachers at the National Space Centre from 4.30pm on Monday 27th September 2010.

This event brings together teachers with people who use STEM in industry, research and business. The main purpose of the event is to share information and views between education and the workplace so that links between them can be strengthened.
The STEM Advisory Forum  enables two way communications between the DfE and BIS High Level Strategy Group and Advisory Forum members. It has an important role to play in giving members of the wider STEM community the opportunity to receive information and feedback on the STEM agenda. Views are expressed via the STEM Advisory Forum website, events such as this one and other routes. These views are used to help inform the DfE and BIS in taking forward the Government's STEM agenda.

The STEM career role models featured are:

Graham Gannon, Entrepreneur uses a challenge based on designing and selling MP3 players to demonstrate how important mathematics skills are in the real world.

Leo Garcia, Medical Physicist shows students how he uses ultrasound to detect cancer tumours.

Chris Styles, Applications Engineer visits Linton Village College in Cambridge, to run an electronics workshop and talk about his work.

Sheila Kanani, Planetary Scientist demonstrates how it’s possible to cook up a comet in the classroom, talks about her work on the Cassini spacecraft and explains to students how they can follow in her footsteps and pursue a career in space science.

Faye Cashman, Spacecraft Engineer  shows students her multi-million pound Mars rover robot and sets the students the challenge of building a landing craft for an egg. Faye also gives a guided tour of her workplace, providing an insight into what it is like to work in the space industry.

Derbyshire STEM Ambassador is a Leading Light

by Guest Blogger: CathyB 21. April 2009 11:20

Jonathan Taylor, a materials technologist with Rolls Royce in Derby, was featured in The Times magazine on Saturday 18th April. Jonathan’s portrait is part of STEMNET’s new Leading Lights exhibition which aims to raise awareness of the STEM Ambassadors programme and to challenge public perceptions about what working in STEM means.

The exhibition of 18 portraits of young STEM Ambassadors is going to Manchester, Cheltenham, Birmingham and Bristol until the end of August.

The portraits are stunning and unusual. You can see the exhibition tour dates and the portraits on our new website at http://www.stemnet.org.uk/news/viewitem.cfm?cit_id=382837.

STEMNET would welcome other venues interested in taking this exhibition for free. If you have any ideas for locating the exhibition in the East Midlands anytime from September 2009 onwards then do get in touch with Cathy Brown on .

P.S. STEM Ambassadors is the new name for STEMNET’s established Science and Engineering Ambassadors programme.
