Celebrations for Industry Awards

An array of successful projects was showcased as part of The Year in Industry scheme in the East Midlands at an event on 25 June at The University of Nottingham.

The Year in Industry initiative is run by the Engineering Development Trust (EDT), a national educational charity.  It places high calibre pre-degree and undergraduate students in challenging industrial work placements. 

The Year in Industry is part of the EDT’s STEM Pathway initiative aimed at stimulating the interest of young people in science, engineering and technology (SET) at a key stage in their education.  The EDT STEM Pathway initiative is funded by the East Midlands Development Agency (emda) and industry partners.

The event at the University of Nottingham is supported by emda and guest speaker at the event was Mr Mike Mosley, Executive Vice President, Rolls-Royce Compressors, Combustion & Casings.

The winner of the regional Contribution to the Business Award, sponsored by the EEF, was also announced at the event as William Blyth for his project, the design and development of a manufacturing quality control test for impellers, working for Napier Turbochargers Ltd, Lincoln.  William attended William Farr C of E School in Lincs.

The Award recognises those who have made an outstanding contribution to their placement company’s business and William received £500 and goes on to represent the East Midlands at the high profile national final in London in September.

A number of other award winners were announced as follows:

  • William Blyth - Rolls-Royce Personal Achievement Award – the design and development of a manufacturing quality control test for impellers.
  • Mark Burton from Loughborough University, lives in Matlock – a clean up of the organisation’s learning catalogue – E.On Communications Award
  • Henry Chigere from Birmingham University – two applications to simplify monitoring and aid diagnosing problems with communications - Advantica Innovation Award & also Third Prize in Contribution to the Business Award, sponsored by East Midlands Airport.
  • Mark Borsuk, Nottingham High School for Boys – two applications to simplify monitoring and aid diagnosing problems with communications – Runner Up in Contribution to the Business Award – East Midlands Airport David Cross, from Northampton School for Boys – a data capture system - Rolls-Royce Manufacturing Award.

  • Charlotte Davies, Burton College, from Derby, working for Rolls-Royce, DerbyKen Leong, from Nottingham University, working for E.On UK

  • Richard Ashwell from Aylesbury Grammar School, Bucks, working for Rolls-Royce, Derby.

Geoff Jellis - from the EDT said, “This year’s initiative has produced some great projects and my congratulations goes to all the participants for the extremely high standard of work.  I am sure many of the projects showcased will be of great benefit to the partner companies.”
